Given the current outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, consumers may be interested in purchasing ultraviolet-C (UVC) lamps to disinfect surfaces in the home or similar spaces. The FDA is providing answers to consumers’ questions about the use of these lamps for disinfection during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a recent study, UV-Light was determined to not only kills various viruses and bacteria that are air and surface borne, but it also does kill COVID-19.
“UVC light is the type of UV light that’s most effective at killing germs. It can be used to disinfect surfaces, air, and liquids.
UVC light kills germs like viruses and bacteria through damaging molecules like nucleic acids and proteins. This makes the germ incapable of performing the processes that it needs to survive.”
